Top US Journalist Admits He Never Writes The Truth

John Swinton, the then preeminent New York journalist and Chief of Staff at the New York Times, was the guest of honour at a banquet given him by the leaders of his craft. Someone who knew neither the press nor Swinton offered a toast to the independent press. Swinton outraged his colleagues by replying thus:

“There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.

There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press?

We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.”

John Swinton, 1880

  1. Thanks for sharing the quote! He is so right, at times we are “intellectual prostitutes”, and we do what the “rich men” want and say! Cheers

  2. What is the relevance of this? First- it was written well over a century ago. Second- he was an editor- not a “premiere journalist”. Third he was a radical of the far left- who went on to become a labor organizer…

The fact is journalists insert their opinions in pieces every day. Indeed, Fox news, followed years later by MSNBC, seem to make use of opinion over journalistic integrity as their main business model.

Journalists have a job to do- and many still do it well. That is to report the facts, and while allowing for some opinion and analysis- to not allow it overide the responsibility to report on the truth of what is happening.

  3. Oh, This is Brilliant! I love this quote. Swinton, is now on my watch list, hehe. Times have changed, and yet the manipulation of the truth just gets more and more complicated. The court system is corrupt. The cover-up goes deep. The Matrix is syrupy thick; like candy coated marble. Don’t loose yourself in it.

    • @Jiggs. Exactly! The US press long ago subservient to mammon. Now we have TV, video games, Internet, Hollywood, pop music, puppet politicians, worthless history books, central banks. The web of the Matrix is too many layers deep to tell someone like drugsandotherthings that most everything you were ever told was a lie. To a degree, a deception of some kind. Can it be that the office of the President of the US is held by a non-natural born citizen. Oh yes my friend.. The “powers that be” have their rich little wrinkly fingers in everything by now. Soon enough the internet will be absorbed, our last medium of free press!

      • Here’s an idea: We have to organize groups of people who report, get together, talk about and discuss truth, justice and liberty; before everything is illegal, and the mere mention of impropriety by the government is tantamount to treason.

    • You gotta watch the Ron Paul speech on the previous post. Its epic!

  4. The revolution has begun. By reading this you have joined the collective. The collective, which has existed, as long as humans have, will create the universe in which this revolution unfolds.

  5. The governmental power in the U.S. will soon become concentrated in the Supreme Court. Justice Roberts joined by Justice Breyer and the three women Justices will not only overturn the individual mandate of Obamacare, but will replace it. This replacement will completely reimburse all Americans for health care costs.
